This is not a photo of conventional beauty. But I feel it conveys the strength, and also the terrible, beautiful, vulnerability of Nina Simone that cuts you again and again. Her body is strong, but her face turned away from us. This is Simone to me, her strength of voice hits you without mercy, the kaleidoscope of emotion makes you want to creep away. But you are transfixed. Mighty. Commanding. Beautiful.
